Willingly was the last track we wrote before we started recording ELIZA. We’re really pleased with how this one came out and it happens to be one of the most collaborative tracks we wrote (many of the other tracks were songs that we worked out demos for individually and then brought to the band to complete).
Willingly by Handsome Machines. Track two from ELIZA
The track has its roots in an old demo from 2007 that was recorded on an acoustic guitar to a distorted 3/4 drum machine beat. The only thing that survived from that demo was the chord progression in the chorus. When Stephen and Pete originally got together in 2012 and started writing music, they took another stab at it and recorded two versions — one with a noodling guitar riff and piano and another with keyboards and guitar arpeggios in a style reminiscent of newer Radiohead. Once again only the chorus survived.
We gave it another shot with the band and Daniel came up with a great bassline that gave the song new life. From there we started working on the demo in August of 2014 and the rest fell into place.
We started tracking ELIZA in December of 2014.
